PHOENIX – MediMin, a Valley leader in fast, affordable and convenient health care, is pleased to announce it now offers the new human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine – Gardasil® ® -- at its three Valley clinic locations. The vaccine is recommended for females 9-26 years of age.
Gardasil® is the first vaccine approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to prevent cervical cancer, precancerous genital lesions and genital warts due to HPV.
"The Gardasil® vaccine marks a tremendous achievement for women’s health,” said Rob Tofil, chief executive officer of MediMin. “Women can now prevent cervical cancer, which can be a life-threatening disease, with this simple vaccine. We are very proud to offer this vaccine to the community.”
HPV is the most common sexually-transmitted infection in the United States. One if four U.S. women ages 14 to 59 is infected with the sexually transmitted virus that in some forms can cause cervical cancer, according to a study published in the current issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Gardasil® is given as three injections over a six-month period. The MediMin cost is $360, plus a $19 injection fee per injection. Females under the age of 18 will need parental consent to obtain the vaccine. No appointment is necessary at the clinics and the average wait time is 15 minutes.
“This vaccine is a great victory for women,” said Mary Pat Nesbit, PA-C, clinic manager of the MediMin Scottsdale clinic. “It is a powerful tool is helping all women take charge of their health and their future.”
The vaccine does not protect females if they already have been infected with HPV, indicating the importance of immunization before potential exposure to the virus.
