MediMin Offers New Shingles Vaccine for Adults Age 60 and Older

PHOENIX – MediMin, a Valley leader in fast, affordable and convenient health care, is pleased to announce it now offers the shingles vaccine – Zostavax®® -- at its three Valley clinic locations.  The vaccine is recommended for adults age 60 and older.

Last year, the Federal Drug Administration approved Zostavax®, the first vaccine for adult shingles. Studies show it can prevent shingles roughly half the time.

Shingles is a sort of distant cousin of the well-known chickenpox.  Chickenpox is caused by the virus varicella. chickenpoxShingles occurs when varicella, which remains dormant in the body, “wakes up," most often in older people or those with compromised immune systems. Up to half of the nearly 1 million shingles cases in the U.S. each year occur in people 60 years and older. More than 90 percent of adults in America have had chickenpox, which puts them at risk for shingles. 

The cost for the Zostavax® vaccine at the MediMin clinics is $250 for individuals with Medicare Part B, or $269 for those with other insurance carriers or who wish to pay out of pocket.

“Shingles can be extraordinarily painful and can disrupt the lives of those who have the disease,” said Mary Pat Nesbit, PA-C, clinic manager of the MediMin Scottsdale clinic.  “This vaccine will prevent so many from needlessly enduring the pain of this disease.”

Clinic Locations and Hours of Operation
MediMin clinics are located inside Bashas' at Scottsdale Road and Grayhawk Drive in Scottsdale and at 75th Avenue and Thunderbird Road in Peoria. These clinics are open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday; Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The Phoenix clinic is located inside Food City at 91st Avenue and Thomas Road in Phoenix. This clinic is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
